MACBA

The Macba “ Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art “( Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona ) is located in the old town, in Raval, near Be Hostels. As a public entity, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) assumes responsibility for disseminating contemporary art, offering a diverse range of visions, and generating critical debates on art and culture, while aspiring to reach increasingly diverse audiences. MACBA is an open institution where citizens can find a space of public representation, and also prioritises education and innovation in its field. All of the above, in addition to its commitment to heritage preservation and networking with other institutions, place MACBA at the forefront of the art system in Catalonia and confirm Barcelona’s position as a world art capital and an international benchmark.

ANTONI TÀPIES

Antoni Tàpies was a painter, sculptor and art theorist, who became one of the most famous European artists of his generation. The Foundation was created in 1984 by the artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art. It combines the organisation of temporary exhibitions, symposia, lectures and film seasons with a range of publications to go with the activities and periodic shows of Antoni Tàpies’ work. The Fundació owns one of the most complete collections of Tàpies’ work, mostly made up of donations by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies.

GAUDÍ HOUSE MUSEUM

Antoni Gaudí is one of the outstanding figures of Catalan culture and international architecture. The Gaudí House Museum in Park Güell, which was officially opened on 28 September 1963, was the residence of Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (1852-1926) from 1906 until late-1925. Today, this private centre is open to the public to give the visitor a more intimate glimpse of the Catalan architect. The house conserves both the memory of Gaudí and many examples of furniture and other objects that he designed. Crucial to forming an idea of how the great Catalan architect worked, these works also illustrate the craft production system in Catalonia during the Art Nouveau period.

F.C. BARCELONA MUSEUM

F.C. Barcelona is one of the most famous football teams around the world. Barça has more than 200.000 partners around the world and is one of the most followed in social networks. Visitors can know all Barça history visiting their museum which was remodeled in 2010 converting the experience of visiting the museum in a 2.0 experience around F.C. Barcelona History. The restructuring saw the museum split in three separate sections with a 3D cinema, audiovisual touch-screen, and information on the history of FC Barcelona. The first section includes a collection of photos, documents and trophies detailing the club’s history on an interactive glass wall, allowing visitors to touch the screens and see information wall. The glass wall, equipped with laser technology, allows the exhibition of video, images and music through user-feedback.

PICASSO MUSEUM

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is a key reference for understanding the formative years of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. The genius of the young artist is revealed through the more than 3,800 works that make up the permanent collection. Furthermore, the Museu Picasso, opened in 1963, also reveals his deep relationship with Barcelona: an intimate, solid relationship that was shaped in his adolescence and youth, and continued until his death. The Museum has undergone successive renovations and expansions, and it’s currently starting to develop new programmes, activities and services to become a reference place, envisaged to spreading knowledge and to fostering the visitor’s participation and critical views. The Museum wishes to be a dialogue space, exploring new approaches to Picasso’s work and influence and offering new perspectives on the Museum Collection.

There are a lot of other museums in Barcelona city. Some of them are in Raval quarter, near to our Barcelona Hostels. Book an accommodation with us, and enjoy Barcelona culture!

Don’t miss the Sónar 2012! Come to Barcelona, go to the Sónar and sleep with Be Hostels.

As you probably know, Sónar is one of the best music events in Barcelona and around Europe. Each year for one weekend in June, the amazing sunny city of Barcelona is flooded by thousands of music fans from all over Europe and becomes literally a party city!

This year’s edition takes place from the 14th until the 16th June 2012, allowing for a couple of dives in the ocean before (or after) the festival. In contrast to many summer festivals, Sonar does not take place in a field, with people camping since it’s a city festival. So you must look for accommodation and what better place than stay with us at Be Hostels in Barcelona?

There are two different locations where the festival takes place in Barcelona:

- the day concert location (Sonar by Day) in the city centre

- the night party location (Sonar by Night) where you can arrive by public transport.

This year’s line-up brings you such names as New Order, Lana del Rey, Fatboy Slim, Richie Hawtin, Die Antwoord, Friendly Fires, Laurent Garnier, among many many other national and international artists! Just check-out the constantly growing line-up at the official Sonar webpage for more details!

There are various tickets available for Sonar Festival with different price ranges. At present the offer includes the following:

- Festival Pass (155.00€): access to all events (the 3 day plus 2 night events)

- Sonar 2 Night Ticket (100.00€): Friday&Saturday night event

- Sonar by Day Ticket (39.00€): Day ticket for one day event

- Sonar by Night Ticket (60.00€): Night ticket for one night event.

Where to buy your tickets

Tickets for the festival are available on the phone or online. There are also dedicated phone/online outlets for the UK, France, Belgium and Switzerland. If you have made an online or over the phone booking there is also a list of collection centres on Sonar’s official site where tickets can be collected for entry into the festival itself.

For more information regarding how to purchase tickets for Sonar, check the Official Sonar website.

How to get to ‘Sonar by Day’

The day festival part of the Sonar Festival takes place in the centre of the Raval area, a neighbourhood in the city center of Barcelona. It takes place in the grounds of two adjacent buildings – the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporánia de Barcelona) and the MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona), right in the city center and the Raval neighbourhood where Be mar Hostel, Be Sound Hostel and Be Ramblas Hotel are located.
You will be able to reach the venue on foot, since its 50m walking distance from the above facilities. The area sits towards the top and to the left of the Ramblas (if you are facing up the hill, towards Plaza Catalunya at the top of the Ramblas). From the Ramblas streets such as Calle Tallers and Calle Bon Success will lead you towards the site of the festival.
The main entrance to the festival is on Calle Montalegre. If you need to pick up tickets from the gate, the ticket office is just around the corner, in Plaza dels Angels.

MACBA and CCCB
 Calle Montalegre, 5

Metro: Catalunya (Green Line, L3) or (Red Line, L1) or Universitat (Red Line, L1) or (Purple Line, L2)

How to get to ‘Sonar by Night’

Getting to Sonar by Night is slightly more complicated than getting to Sonar by Day. You will see hoards of party people around the city struggling to catch taxis and buses to the out of town location. Sonar by Night takes place in the Forum, on the outskirts of the city.
When planning your night it is worth planning how you are going to get home before the night has begun. Sonar by Night goes on until 08:00, at which point there are thousands of people in a location outside of Barcelona with only a few options home. See below for further advice.

Getting to Sonar by Night by Bus:

Sonar provides what they call ‘uninterrupted buses’ to and from the venue on Friday and Saturday night, from 20:30 – 08:00. These run from Plaça de las Drassanes (at the bottom of the Ramblas) and drop you at the entrance to the festival. They are complimentary. However, be warned, there will be large queues of people waiting for these buses – in previous years there have been waits of up to two hours for the buses.
Plaça de las Drassanes

Metro: Drassanes (Green Line, L3)

Getting to Sonar by Night – Taxi:

It is approximately a 15 – 20 minute journey to Sonar by Night in a taxi. The important thing to remember with taxis is that they will be in very high demand on the Sonar weekend. If you have decided to catch a taxi, head to the less touristy parts of town, where you will find less competition for the taxis.
Also, regarding taxis, remember that there will be surcharges for travelling on the weekend, and another if you are travelling after midnight. When returning to the centre of town from Sonar by Night, taxi drivers are only too aware of how in-demand they are-. They will often simply turn off the mater and ask for as much as they think that they can get out of you, You may find yourselves paying up to 60 euros – a much more viable option if you’re traveling in a group.

Getting to Sonar by Night by Train:

The train station that is closest to Sonar by Night is called ‘Europa/Fira’. It can be reached via all trains leaving the FGC station that is located in the Espanya metro station. The journey lasts only 5 minutes and trains run at least four times every hour. The Sonar by Night venue is just around the corner from the train station and signposts will lead you directly to it.
Trains from Plaza Espanya run until approximately 00:00 and trains from Europa/Fira start running again at 05:10.
You can use a normal Metro ticket or T10 to make this train journey. For more information on this, see our Barcelona Metro Guide.
For more information on train times, check the Official FGC Website.

And today we want to talk you about where to drink a good beer here in Barcelona.

The brewmaster Over ten years ago the brewmaster became enraptured by beer and its world and since then his passion, dedication and creativity have enabled him to produce some of the best beers, according to the palates of renowned sommeliers. His youth and dedication guarantee that he still has a lot to discover from this thousand-year-old art. The brewmaster heads the staff of La Cervesera Artesana, which is made up by a multidisciplinary team which has found a common link through beer. In one way or another they are all beer lovers, and in all of them you can find an expert advisor in the subject.

2 – Cerveceria Jazz

People that comes to Barcelona does for different reasons, Gaudí and his modernism, skate in its streets, go to the beach, for Messi… But there is one of the most important reasons to come to this wonderful city, the food.

Here in Barcelona we have a Mediterranean diet, based in:

- Fresh fruits & Vegetables, bread, potatoes, nuts and beans are eaten daily in large quantities.

- Olive oil is the primary source of fat, which is a monounsaturated fat (sometimes called the “good fats”) and does not raise blood cholesterol in the same way that saturated fats and trans fats do.

- Fish is eaten several times a week and contains omega-3 oils, thought to reduce the risk of heart disease.

- Meat and poultry are eaten in smaller quantities.

- Wine is consumed moderately.

Here you have a 5 spot guide where to eat cheap Mediterranean food.

Mesón David Restaurant

Meson David Restaurant first opened its doors in 1921. They can proudly say that Meson David is one of the few taverns left in Barcelona and one of the oldest restaurants in the city. Since then it has been one of the favorite meeting place for the locals. Also famous persons, actors, musicians and others … visited the Meson, not only because of its location near the busy Parallel Avenue (Avenue Theatre), but because of the excellent way of preparing and serving meals to visitors.

Lunch Menu – 9€

Café Restaurant Dhub

This restaurant, located in Disseny Hub Barcelona ( DHUB ), next to Picasso Museum. This kind coffee-restaurant is opened all day, and at lunch and dinner you can choose the menu, with high quality Mediterranean products. You can also enjoy music on fridays at the restaurant.

All over the world skaters know that Barcelona is one of the bests if not the best place for skating. The weather, the streets, the people, the lodging, contributes to convince skaters coming to Barcelona. This is really lovely because at Be Hostels we like the sk8 culture, and all about it!

MACBA

Along with a few other ledges of different sizes, some drops, a nice 5 set and the newly renovated big 3 set in the back, this place has a lot to offer. That is to say nothing about the smooth granite tiles where you are propelled forward forever with just one push.
The other part of MACBA is the vibe. Now granted this can change from day to day, but generally the locals are friendly and people are in a good mood because of course they are skating in Barcelona. Lots of people come there to hang out, talk, watch the skating and have something to drink (you can drink openly in Barcelona). Even if you don’t skate it is a fun place to people watch.
One of the other great things is that it is a no bust spot. You are officially allowed to skate there on Sunday and Tuesday evenings but there seems to be little attempt to scare people off at any other time of the day. The evenings are always a good choice because it is shady at that point and there are lots of people to skate with.

PARALEL

Paralel is one of those spots seems like it was made for skateboarding. It is hard to imagine what those perfect cement blocks (which are actually manual pads) would be made for anything but skating. All the edges have metal on them for grinding although there are some places were the cement has been chipped away a lot.
Not only does Paralel have the manual pads but there are also some granite ledges, a stage ledge (check the photo), a cool looking space ship thing that you can wall ride as well as the mandatory smooth plaza section.
Like MACBA this spot usually has lots of skaters as well as people hanging out, kids playing soccer and tourists who stop for a look. This makes it a good place to go to at the beginning of your trip if you want to meet some locals or if you prefer to skate with other people.

UNIVERSITAT

Universitat has a great atmosphere. You will often find people skating there and sometimes you won’t. But what you will find is plenty of people walking through the plaza watching. This definitely gives some motivation to bring you’re A game for the crowd. And again because the plaza is large people don’t tend to get in the way although there is a bit of dodging pedestrians once and a while. But heh that’s all part of the fun.

FORUM

When we talk about spots it’s usually a variety of skateable objects in a limited space. Well Forum is a skate spot except it’s huge. Made for the Barcelona Summer Olympics in 1992 the Forum is basically a giant plaza with endless spots. It goes from the street where you get off the Tram or Metro all the way down to the water. All you have to do is skate around and you will keep finding spots. When you first get there you will probably run into the snake ledges, which have some great curved ledges. Then there is this large building with an undercover area that has the famous angled hip, which you have probably seen in more than a few skate videos.
Another thing to mention is the addition is the addition of a new skatepark in 2011. The Forum Skatepark has a mini ramp, some hips, rails and grind ledges and is a great place to chill after or even before a day of skating. It can be a little hard to find but definitely worth the search as any good skate spot is.

MUNTANYA MÀGICA

Playgrounds. We loved them as kids. You got to slide around, jump over things and just generally let loose. Well as a skateboarder nothing much changes. So why not take your skateboard to the playground and relive those memories from childhood? And this time you get to combine your passion for skateboarding and play (Well I guess they really are the same thing aren’t they:) At this spot you will find giant metal slides. They can be skated like mini ramps, launched into or anything you want. That is the fun of playing, you get to imagine the possibilities.

And if you want to enjoy all of this spots, we’ve got a good new for you! Now at Be Hostels you can book for just 14€ per night! And spend your money tuning your skate! Do it HERE!

Barcelona is a great place for surfing. The weather, the beaches and the people, makes an special cocktail which converts the city in the most visited place for surfers along the Mediterranean.
Here you will discover where to surf, where to rent a surfboard or a wetsuit, and even how to shape a surfboard!

One of the advantages in Barcelona is the weather, you’ll usually have sunny days during your surfing adventure. It’s important for us not to have cold all the time, although the wetsuit is thick!

The temperature during the surf season ( between October and April ) is normally between 5º – 20º degrees, and the water temperature is between 12º and 21º. Let’s see the best beaches for surf in Barcelona!

1 – Barceloneta Beach ( Barcelona city )

It is certainly the birthplace of Catalan surfing and one of the first spots to be surfed in Barcelona. E swells are definitely the best for this beach, its orientation is unique. It’s a must visit beach for surfing!

PRO – City beach with great access with public transport, and even walking from Be Mar Hostel.

AGAINST – Be careful with your properties ( Like everywere )

Webcam Here

2 – La Caleta ( El Masnou )

One of the most popular spots on the Maresme coast. A versatile spot that welcomes any small Swell. The days of strong waves of NE, also works with SE waves but of lesser quality.
In good condition produces fast waves and pipes very funny, the best size is from 0.5m to 1.5m. The best wave often appears at the left edge of the beach in front of the stones.

PRO – Easy access from Barcelona by car ( 10 mins ) and by Train ( 20 mins ). Free car parking ( Except summer ). Vans are allowed.

AGAINST – Very full on great days of surf.

3 – El Masnou ( Masnou village )

This spot has the classic left wave of Maresme that only works with strong E or NE. Is sheltered from the wind, and it’s a perfect option when the waves in other beaches are impossible to surf due to wind or size. It’s a fun wave with a half meter or meter tall and the wave is also very smooth and easy to surf.

PRO – Sheltered from the wind, and easy arrive with car or train ( Max. 20 mins )

AGAINST – Be careful with the rocks!

4 – Aiguadolç ( Sitges city )
