Barcelona Carnival 2013

Carnival lasts a week and is a time of complete joy and exuberance before Ash Wednesday. People dress up in special costumes and disguises and there are parades and events all across the city. In Barcelona, the carnival begins on ´Greasy Thursday´ (´Dijous Gras´). This day is celebrated by eating good and excessive meals. The big Carnival Parade will be held during the weekend. Then, on Ash Wednesday, Carnival comes to an close with the ‘Sardine’s funeral’ when the King of Carnival dies and is buried. Colorful costumes are exchanged for black clothes and tradition calls for eating fish.

So…you can expect some fun days and crazy nights! The carnival boasts a number of colourful parades with scantily clad revellers, outrageous costumes, street music, and bands.

You can also visit the Sitges Carnival, near Barcelona, which has become world-famous. This Costa Dorada destination manages to pull off one of the most amazing Carnaval experineces possible, year after year- an extravaganza of colour and hedonism that can rival any city’s celebrations. Sitges is just a 40-minute train ride away from Barcelona, and a great option for a day (or night!) trip out of the city.

The best way to get to Sitges from Barcelona is by train. There is frequent service from Passeig de Gràcia and the Estació de Sants.
